June 26, 1940 - September 13, 2020
Kenneth Ray Hoggard - brother, father, and grandpa – passed away peacefully on September 13, 2020 at his home surrounded by loving family members. Born on June 26, 1940 to Anthony “Tony” and Stella “Mary” (Timmons) Hoggard in Midland, MI. Ken lived a life filled to the brim with work, relationships, friends and family and always…music. An entrepreneur all his life, Ken was very proud of the businesses he had owned: Michigan Metals in Merrill, MI; Grand Traverse Industries in Elk Rapids, MI; Industrial Machine Shop in Williston ND; Quality Machine Shop in Mandan ND; and Boardman Oilfield Machine in South Boardman MI. At the ages of 17 & 18 he was already building houses as K.R. Hoggard Construction. He was definitely a man of many talents. Ken was known for gathering friends and family to sing and play music. He passed his love of music on to his children and grandchildren and was so proud when they would take part in the music gatherings. All have lots of memories of him playing his guitar and singing, and many others were encouraged to develop their talents and participate. Although he had enjoyed ‘rock and roll’ as a younger man – at the end of his life’s journey he believed in only two types of music - “Country” and “Western”. As a young man, Ken was interested in snowmobiling racing (Elizabeth was older before she realized that all snowmobiles weren’t “Fox Trax” as that was the brand that he raced). He also enjoyed water sports – boating, water skiing (including slalom and barefoot), motorcycling, and trips to Canada with family and friends to hunt bear and moose. He was always up for an adventure! Ken will be remembered by his many friends as well as his surviving sisters Kay Beck, Ginny Johnson, Chelsea Hoggard and brothers Keith Hoggard and Chase Hoggard. Four children mourn his passing: Elizabeth (Dan) Brinker, Jon (Susi) Hoggard, Cindi (Ron) Konig and Mark Hoggard. He also had five grandchildren: Amber Sather, Christopher Augustine, Kendra Hoggard, Karly Hoggard, and Jon Hoggard as well as three great-grandchildren: Mavis, Joseph, and Vivian Sather. He was predeceased by his parents, aunts, uncles, and his beloved Westie “Boo” who was his faithful companion in these last sixteen years. A short service of remembrance and committal will be held graveside on Thursday, September 17, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. South Boardman Cemetery with a gathering for lunch and music afterwards at The American Legion Hall in South Boardman. All are welcome to attend the open air service (no restrictions) and it will be casual dress like Dad would want it. There will be a large Celebration of Life at a later date and his children and siblings will have it posted on their Facebook pages when a date is decided. The arrangements are being handled by Kalkaska Funeral Home.
