David Elmer Young

David Elmer Young, 93, of Mancelona passed away Monday December 22, 2014 at the Kalkaska Memorial Eden Center. He was born to Shirley and Ruby (Coursey) Young on May 8, 1921 in Detroit. David was a WWII Veteran serving in the Army Air Corps. In 1943 he was shipped overseas where he drove truck for the Quartermaster Trucking Company delivering ammunition and bombs wherever they were needed. He served in France and England. David worked several years for Chrysler Corporation, he then pursued his passion for being a truck driver. He did over the road and local deliveries throughout his career. When he retired and moved to Kalkaska County he became involved in the local community by helping to build the CETA hall and Chalker Park, he was the commander of the Kalkaska Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the President of the Lion’s Club. He has served on several community boards including the Commission on Aging and CETA. David was also a volunteer at KAIR and Dave and Peggy were the Senior King and Queen of the National Trout Festival. Dave was united in marriage to Amelia (Rawski) in 1941 in Detroit together they had five children; Jeanette, Dolores, Christine, Patricia and David. Amelia passed away in 1993. David then married Peggy (Fletcher), who survives him, on December 29, 1997. He is also survived by his children Jeanette Young of White Lake, Dolores (Tom) Waite of Mancelona, Patricia (Butch) Lorion of Columbus Twp, and David Young of Indian Harbor Beach, FL, his step children Dawn (Ralph) Humphrey of Kalkaska, Dale (Karen) Allen of Munith, Roger Allen of Stockbridge and Randy (Peggy) Allen of Stockbridge. 10 grandchildren, 7 step grandchildren, 26 great grand children, 1 step great grandchild, and 9 great-great grand children. He was preceded in death by his parent, his first wife, daughter Christine and brothers and sisters; John, Herbert, Shirley, Carl, Glen, Lucille and Rosemary. Visitation will take place on Friday December 26, 2014 from 2pm to 8pm at the Kalkaska Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Saturday December 27, 2014 at 11am with final visitation beginning at 10am at the Kalkaska United Methodist Church with Pastor Mike Neihardt officiating.
